trimmed cathe-
dral in the heart of
town.  High officials
 
and wealthy merchants in
this district by the harbor
build houses influenced by
the architecture of south-
ern Spain.  Residents watch
the world go by from their
roofed balconies, which
deepen cool daytime shad-
ows cast along the narrow
streets.
   Still under construction
when damaged by Drake's
cannon, the cathedral was
repaired using the original
plans of 1575.  Alterations
in the early 1900s added
the bell tower and a stuc-
coed facade.
